I set off that day from Reykjavik at about 9 PM without a clear plan where to take my panorama. At the time Iceland didn’t have any site enlisted with UNESCO although I knew they were working on registering Þingvellir, Iceland’s ancient parliament place – it’s an official site now.
Anyway I decided to drive past Þingvellir into the central highlands to explore a jeep track I hadn’t gone before: Kaldidalur. The Icelandic Highlands are the largest, undisturbed desert in the whole of Europe so they seemed a very worthy candidate for a UNESCO listing to me.
Just after midnight I reached its highest point only to find myself surrounded by dense mist. I had to abandon the car and I took a walk towards the Þórisjökull glacier hoping that weather conditions would improve soon. After spotting the perfect location for the shoot and getting the camera ready all I had to do was waiting for the “magical moment”.
Well, after some hours of me freezing & waiting everything fell into place – you can see the result here. A larger image can be viewed here.
